Water Tower #2 Coating

7-26 - Water Tower #2, located at the top of Hickory Boulevard in the Farmers Ridge Subdivision, has a capacity of 400,000 gallons and was constructed in 2005. Lightning struck the tower during a severe thunderstorm on August 24, 2018. Soon after, citizens and City Staff discovered “sheets” of the tower’s protective coating that had separated from the tower and fallen to the ground.

The League of Minnesota Cities determined the coating failure was fully covered under the City’s insurance policy. The City sought competitive bids to remove the remainder of the tank coating and apply a new coating. The bid was awarded to Maguire Iron of Sioux Falls, SD. That work will begin immediately, starting with draining the tower. Residents in Farmers Ridge may notice a slight reduction in pressure during this time, but otherwise water supply will be largely unaffected.

Coating removal will be accomplished by sandblasting. A full shroud will encompass the tower during this process. Once complete, Maguire will begin the multi-stage coating process. The tower will display the current City logo as seen on this website.
