Design standards project
The City of Belle Plaine is committed to keeping Belle Plaine beautiful!
The City Council has re-appointed the City’s Design Committee in order to prepare recommendations for design components, potential funding sources for community-wide improvements and administer the design standards for properties in all commercial zoning districts.
The first goal of the newly created committee is to enhance the City’s current design standards. In December 2007 the City Council approved the contract with the University of Minnesota-Center for Rural Design (CRD) to assist the City in updating our current commercial design standards. Additional representatives have been added to the appointed design committee to enhance the perspectives partaking in the process. The process is expected to conclude in June 2008 with a final product consisting of a design manual that will be part of, or an addition to, the City Code.
As part of this process, the committee will look at enhancing a unique niche Belle Plaine has to offer, but also expanding on the vision for the community. What is special about Belle Plaine that can really “put Belle Plaine on the map”, as someone once said?
Another important element to this process is to look at creating a more unified community. The committee and University are exploring options to bridge the gap that essentially has been portrayed by TH 169 splitting the community of Belle Plaine into two separate communities.
